“Addiction” is so misunderstood. Sometimes there is chemical dependency, but many times we feel out of control way before that point…I did. The bottom line is if the behavior is causing you trouble, lack of peace, or consequences in your life, you would think it would be easy to just “not do it again” – I disagree.
At some point, motivation to change has to come from inside you, and I hope I can enter into your story around that time. Stabilizing and stopping the disruptive or dysfunctional behavior is really important, and I can hold you accountable or suggest options, but staying changed is another story.
My recovery was like that – I could stop, but staying stopped over a longer period of time is what I struggled with. Once I realized I was using because my life was too difficult to navigate on my own, it helped me realize that there was nothing actually wrong with me.
Addiction is a disease, and an overhaul from doing the same thing over and over to try to stop is needed.
Therapy is a part of many recoveries, and therapists like myself can help point you to the other available resources that are likely necessary to support a new life of freedom (and challenge!).
I believe that there are many paths to successful recovery that will work with your goals and desires, and I want to ensure you can make the necessary changes to achieve your goals.
